Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been a first grade teacher at a high poverty/high minority population school for 5 1/2 years. I have been conducting a writer's workshop for 5 1/2 years in my classroom to teach students the writing process and foster a love of writing. Writing workshop has consistently been one of my students' favorite activities. Students learn about the writing process by writing on topics of their choice. They write for a meaningful purpose, and enjoy sharing their finished stories with the class. Although most of what I am asking for sounds simple (paper), it is what I need most. My students use enormous amounts of paper because they love to write stories. When they finish their work early, in other subjects, the first thing that ask is if they can go write. The majority of the money that I spend out of my pocket goes to buy paper. I like to provide students with different types of paper, so that they can create stories that they are proud of and can share as "published" works of writing. Students take more time with their work, and feel a greater sense of ownership when they are able to choose how to design their piece of writing. Because the school cannot supply everyone with enough paper, teachers are used to buying their own. I also would like the word journals to help students to write more independently. I purchased them last year with my own money, and they were extremely useful for fostering independent writing. The picture journals will be used to help students with their ideas during the drafting or pre-writing stage of the writing process. I would like to be able to provide each student with a personal writing journal, because it helps students to use resources independently to finish their writing. Writing workshop is a successful activity that promotes a love of writing among my students. Even students that struggle with reading, often love writing workshop because it is an opportunity for them to write in an low anxiety environment, about something that is of interest to them. They are given support at their instructional level through teacher conferences. I cannot tell you how much my students enjoy writing, and I would like to be able to further support writing workshop in my classroom. By supplying my class with different types of paper, word journals, writing journals and blank writing books, you will be fostering students' love of writing and development of the writing process.
