Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember the joy of sounding out a word on your own, or being able to spell a word without asking for help? What if you could give this feeling of personal accomplishment to a group of students who speak English as a second language?

My students are first graders in an inner-city public school.

They speak English as a second language and come from families where getting an education was not an option. Many of my students are new to the United States and some have never been in school before. Their parents are dedicated to providing their children with the best possible education, but they are unable to help them with their studies since they are not literate in their native language. Providing students with word journals will allow them the independence they need to be able to complete assignments independently and with confidence.

My Project

Our class engages in listening, speaking reading and writing activities daily. Each week, we learn approximately 10 new words. Words often are basic sight words, or content specific vocabulary. With the word journal students will have a book where they can record all new words alphabetically and refer to them again and again. The journals also provide a list of high-frequency and commonly misspelled words for each letter of the alphabet that will speed up the writing process and give students autonomy in their work. The markers will help students decorate their writing and make colorful posters to support their work. Art is a wonderful tool for self expression. As Pablo Picasso said: "All children are artists." I believe that many of my students use art to express themselves where they do not have the words yet.

Help these young writers and budding artists achieve their goals by giving them the tools they need to succeed in spelling and art.

Your contribution will extend beyond the life of the notebook or the markers.
