My Students

Our school is in a low socioeconomic area of the city. We are a Title I school meaning that most students qualify for free or reduced lunch subsidized by the federal government. Many students are dropped off at school around 7:30 am and some aren't picked up until 6 pm. Many of the students' families come from other countries. Their home language is often something other than English. I have a responsibility to guide my students through the year providing them with new and diverse experiences to make them lifelong learners.

I teach in a Humanities/ Leadership Magnet.

Humanitarianism and Leadership skills are developed and emphasized throughout the year.

My Project

Writing is an area that always needs practice. With the extra writing resources from Scholastic, my students will have another avenue to practice writing skills in class or for homework. Having this step-by-step guide to writing informational text is a concept students need from now and through college and beyond. Eventhough the scholastic materials covers informational writing, the writing process is the same in whichever genre is the focus.

Music can inspire writing.

Adding music in the our classroom environment can help the brain concentrate. With the bluetooth speakers, my students can have brain breaks. Music also can help the creative juices flow when writing creatively.
