Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the amazing privilege to teach 140 AMAZING students who overcome every obstacle that they are faced with each and every day. Those circumstances (Hurricane Harvey, poverty, single-parent homes) may make others cower with fear or fail to weights of the world.

My students break barriers and continuously overcome challenges by working hard, having grit, and remaining resilient against the challenges of inner city life.

My students are 85% Hispanic, 13% African American/Black, 1% White and 1% Asian Pacific Islander. 80% of my students are the English Language Learners and 20% are identified Gifted and Talented.

My Project

My students have had a difficult 7th grade by experiencing Hurricane Harvey's destruction. The effects of the storm were displayed in their recent performance in their reading skills.

We are using a new strategy called the CHUNK Method that utilizes colored highlighters to identify parts of a paragraph to write more effective responses to writing prompts.

The topic sentence will be written in or highlighted in blue. The concrete details will be written in or highlighted in pink. Commentary will be written or highlighted in green and the concluding sentence will be written or highlighted yellow. The strategy is designed to support our students to structure their written responses in a formulaic manner to ensure they address prompts to succeed on exams.

Students will use strategy to identify key concepts from the text that can assist them in their critical thinking to respond to tasks. The strategy will be implemented all school year in order to prepare for the spring administration of state testing. Using highlighters to dissect and analyze will allow students a framework and confidence for them to grow in their reading skills in 8th grade.
