My Students

All great writers have to start somewhere. Every kindergarten student has a story to tell and giving them the ability to create a written account of those stories is the start in securing tomorrows great authors.

My students are kindergartners between the ages of five and six.

They are predominantly African-American and Latino. The school is located in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood. However, this doesn't dissuade them from striving to achieve. They are enthusiastic 'balls of energy' raring to learn and willing to share all they know.

My Project

While many of the students in my kindergarten class feel confident in picking up a story book and 'reading' it, most of them experience writers block when it is time for them to write. Students will use the resources provided to engage in structured writing activities. These activities will include learning to write sentences using high frequency words and simple words. The High Frequency/Sentence centers will provide students with the skills necessary to become independent beginning writers. Students will use the journals to practice the skills learned as they become confident and competent writers.

Writing provides students with the opportunity to express themselves academically and creatively.

If a child feels competent in their writing capabilities they are more likely to also feel confident in expressing themselves. Possessing both of these qualities provides for a better student overall and quite possibly a future award winning author.
