My Students

Panorama School District (about 40 miles from Des Moines) serves about 730 students K-12. The students come from five small towns: Panora, Yale, Jamaica, Linden, and Bagley.

While nearly 40% of the student body qualifies for free/reduced lunch, students have some challenges but also great enthusiasm, pride, and hope.

My Project

Access to quality scientific information is more important than ever, and while my students are learning to write informational- and argumentative texts, they need to read about scientists and science news.

A subscription to Science News would help my 7th- and 8th-grade students not only to read information about science but also to gain quality information for the informational- and argumentative writing they do.

Furthermore, I would share this magazine with the middle school science teacher. We would coordinate which articles he would use in his class and which articles and I would use, reinforcing the use of the magazine and getting double the value.

Students who were learning at home (due to illness or quarantine) would have access to the digital version of the magazine, while the students in school could use either the digital version or the print edition. The online tools would allow us to provide the best possible materials for a variety of learners.

Finally, I always want to give every student the best possible chance to learn about the world, about careers in science, and about their own futures. Having access to this magazine would further all of these goals!
