Help Mrs. L.

Say the word "grammar" to a group pf middle school language arts students, and the groaning and gnashing of teeth begins. But what if there was a way to teach grammar in an interesting way and to teach students to write more effectively at the same time? Greetings! I teach Eighth Grade Language Arts in a K-12 charter school in North Carolina. We are an academically challenging school serving a culturally diverse population. Because we are a charter school, our funding is limited and we do not have access to the many resources our public school counterparts have.

Most of our resources are limited to the standard textbooks recommended by the state; however, there are a myriad of other, more engaging resources out there that can help teachers be more effective in reaching their students. Students need to understand that there is a real-world purpose for everything they learn. In the case of grammar instruction, theoretically, it is to help students become better writers. But grammar taught in isolation to student writing is ineffective. That's why this student workbook, Grammar for Middle School..." is such an effective tool. It helps students improve their writing while at the same time building on and reinforcing grammar skills. Effective writing is a skill that will be needed throughout these students' lives. Again, because of limited resources, our school cannot afford the "extras" beyond the state-prescribed curriculum.

By having these supplementary workbooks, students can actually become more engaged learning how to write more effectively and learn basic grammar rules at the same time. Let's face it -- the purpose of grammar is to help students write better. But if they see traditional grammar instruction as drudgery, they are not as willing or likely to learn. "Grammar for Middle School," I believe, will help engage and improve students as writers first, and grammar instruction will be a positive by-product, or result of this instruction.

By funding this project, you will help my students become better writers and thus better citizens in the 21st century. After all, they will be writing in some form or another all of their lives. They need to be able to "write it right" Please help me help my students by providing these extra resources that otherwise would not be available to them!
