My 2nd graders LOVE reading. They look forward to "book shopping" day. Each table group has a designated day to choose up to 8 books. 4 books at their reading level and the other 4 are books of their choice. My students prefer holding a book to read rather than going online to read. This has to do with them learning virtually when they were in Kindergarten and missing a year of exploring books in their classroom library. Now that they are in 2nd grade and are learning in person, they have learned to read and find interests in many different genres.
It brings me so much joy when they are able to make connections with their books.
Hearing them giggle, seeing them smile, or showing empathy as they read shows me that they are connected to their books.
They have learned to make text-to-text, text-to-self, text-to-media, and text-to-world connections through reading books. As a new teacher, I would love to build my classroom library with more books from all backgrounds.
With these new books that include a various of diversity inclusion books, nonfiction books, SEL, and leveled books my students will feel like they are a bookstore. These books will help educate my students and help them to continue their reading stamina! My newcomers will also benefit greatly from the lower leveled books that my classroom library is missing and will have the opportunity to book shop for more book titles.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this. Turning my library into a space similar to a "bookstore" would be a dream come true for my students and me. The furniture would also help organize our books and the carpet would make our reading space a bit more comfortable.
