Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach to a heterogeneous group of 3rd graders. These kids try to escape the daily adversities that are the realities of their lives. Most of these students come to school with no basic supplies and many of these students do not have any support at home. Learning is the last thing on their mind.

Many students do not have the motivation to learn these days-no matter what learning capabilities they have.

With all of the emphasis on state testing, who could blame them? I try to instill the love of learning by making education fun. I like to use colorful presentations and real images or artifacts of what I am teaching. With generous donors like you, I was able to convert my blackboard to a white dry erase board and get the accompanying black/colored markers and erasures. However, as time went on the dry erase board started to fall apart and the markers would run out and needed to replenish constantly. Then I started to use the overhead projector but because I used it so often, I would burn out the light bulbs monthly and needed special colorful overhead markers which also had to be replenished often. It also wasn’t cost-effective because I had to use boxes of overhead transparencies which were very expensive.

My Project

I would like to use an Epson multimedia projector which I can easily show colorful presentations to my students. These would include graphs, pictures of real life images and objects, slideshow presentations and even short videos that accompany our curriculum. The advantage of using this method of presentation is not only is it Earth friendly and reduces less waste but I can incorporate modern technology into my classroom. By having this item, I can create presentations in my home computer and project it easily in my classroom by using a laptop computer. And of course, this would be done for all subjects and it can be reused year after year. Don’t you wish your teacher taught you by using colorful and fun images on a computer instead of lecturing and writing on a huge board?

I truly believe that all students can learn.

I have taught in the gifted and talented classes as well as the inclusion class where a part of the student body is special needs students. No matter where their abilities lie, I know that all students can be engaged and love the world of learning. They just need to be motivated and know that their teachers care about them. What better way to show than by utilizing the best way to teach and to make it fun?
