Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My school recently bought a COW (Computers on Wheels)! The laptop computers can be checked out to individual classroom teachers for use in the classroom. But there is a big problem! The COW did not come equipped with computer accessories like headphones.
I am a third grade teacher in a Title I school with a large at-risk student population.
That means that over 50% of our students are Economically Disadvantaged and/or English Language Learners. The students love working on the computer, but our access to the computer lab is extremely limited and we only have a few computers located in our classroom. Having a COW (Computers on Wheels) would improve access but only if headphones become available. Younger students need headphones to properly access computer sites, learning programs, and activities. We could also use the headphones for our Nook readers and audio books. Listening improves fluency, aids comprehension, and builds vocabulary.
My Project
Students today use computers when conducting and writing research papers, to complete online tutorials when they are working below grade level, to work on educational programs, such as I-Station, a reading program that builds fluency, comprehension and vocabulary skills, and to play educational games and activities. Students find the computers highly engaging. Time on the computer can also be used as a reward for outstanding work and good behavior.
Having a class set of classroom appropriate headphones will allow students access to the laptop computers, Nook readers, and audio books.
Low-cost headphones are generally of the 'ear-bud' type and are not appropriate for classroom use. The requested headphones are more suited for repeated use with heavier cables and larger 'phones' covering more of the ear and blocking out other sounds. These headphones would greatly benefit my students.
