My kids love to explore our world, but many have never left our town. They are eager to learn. Some are ESL kids, and their struggle is 2 fold. They are trying to learn content at the same time as a new language. Some have hard home lives. They try to get noticed by using undesirable behaviors, but one on one, they melt my heart. They want to be accepted for who they are and reach out to others. They have such potential but often feel stuck in a world that overlooks them.
My Project
We are a Title i school and recently, our district has gone to a 100% free breakfast and lunch policy for students. Title I "shows how my kids eat but not how they learn" a brilliant mind once told me. My kids need to be able to explore the world outside of their town, and many never get that chance. My kids will use this equipment to get a taste of the scientific world. I will create a Discovery table with lots of science activities that my kids can use "hands-on". This microscope will be the center piece. They will view these slides and discover a world they can not see with just the naked eye - our world. I will make books available for check out about scientists, biology, the microscopic world, and more. My kids will learn that no matter how small you are or where you start, you play an important part of our big world.
