I work in a self-contained special education elementary school for children with a variety of disabilities. My class consists of 6 children with autism. My students do not have spontaneous speech and need help with most activities. It is very hard to find programs to engage my students. They are rarely interested and rarely respond to typical material. I spend a great deal of time customizing material to meet my student’s needs. I have a camera but no printer! Students with autism are visual learners and learn best when pictures are the main part of their instruction. I would like a picture printer so that I can use real pictures of my students and their environment when creating materials. Using real pictures in their daily routine will help them to learn. I believe real pictures will help my students to gain self-awareness and begin to connect themselves to their world.
