Children love music and art. My second graders love when I play music in the background while we are working independently. I integrate as many art projects into our curriculum as possible especially in social studies and science. Research has shown that children's core background knowledge dramatically affects their reading comprehension more than any test preparation materials. Writers of newspapers, magazines, and books assume their readership owns a certain amount of background knowledge. As many teachers continue to worry about not having enough time to teach the curriculum that might be on "the test", my 2nd grade team and I have squeezed more content into our curriculum for this coming school year. My 2nd grade students at P.S. 180 in Harlem would love to learn about some of the world's most famous composers and artists. Unlike many children in New York, they are not being exposed to art and music. Many of their families do not take them to the Met or the MOMA. Each month, we are going to teach them about an "artist of the month" and a "composer of the month." For example, in September our composer of the month will be Duke Ellington while we study our community, Harlem. Our artist of the month will be Frida Kahlo and we will paint self-portraits utilizing some of her style. Mike Venezia has written a series of children's picture books called "Getting To Know the World's Greatest Composers" and "Getting To Know the World's Greatest Artists." The addition of these books in our classroom libraries would be an amazing compliment to our discussions, art projects, and curriculum. They are written in a child friendly way to make the artists seem real. The other second grade teachers and I will read these books aloud to our class. We will create shared reading opportunities and art projects that align the styles of the artists to go with our content area curriculum. We will play music to specifically listen to a composer's style and enjoy it in the background during independent work so that it is easily identifiable to our students. In 2nd grade, if you are enthusiastic about a subject, the children are too. If you expose them, then they will learn it. I truly feel that building children's background knowledge is the best way to even the playing field which unfortunately is too often measured by a test. Typical reading strategies to "sound out" the names Beethoven, Bach, Renoir, or Van Gogh won't work. But if you listen to a read aloud, listen to the music, paint with his/her style, and discuss their lives in depth, then you might be able to make a connection in future readings. And who knows? Maybe one of the next greatest composers or artists will be sitting in my class next year. Please help by providing two copies of the books for my class.
