My Students

My students have a hard time picturing cultures and places outside of their own life experience. Books can open doors to places we may never go and people we may never meet. They can also help provide exposure to foreign countries from the comfort of our classroom.

The students in my class are in the third grade.

They attend a wonderful school in a not so wonderful neighborhood. The children are eager to learn and love reading. Many have never traveled outside of the state. They have very limited life experience and so I wish to bring the culture, history, and beauty of the world to them through the books I am requesting.

My Project

The books I am requesting will align with an informational social studies unit we will be covering. The unit focuses on the different countries of the world. My class will be studying Italy, Nigeria, China, and Brazil. The students will be immersed in information from these countries and be asked to choose one country to be the focus of their writing piece. Not only will these books provide much needed reference materials, but they are books that are on their reading level. This means that they can decode, comprehend, and enjoy these books independently.

My students haven't had a real opportunity to see the world.

With your help, I'd like the opportunity to bring the world to them through these books. This could be a stepping stone to encourage my students to dream, broaden their horizons, and maybe one day be able to really visit the countries they have read about.
