World Cultures - Small Town Meets Big World

Help me give my students a cultural experience by trying ethnic snacks (like seaweed), and the materials they need (like tissue paper, pipe cleaners, and clay) to create cultural art projects!

My Project

We live in a small town in Northern Michigan. Not too many of my students have traveled outside of our state, and even fewer of them have had the opportunity to travel outside of our country.

I believe that all students (especially in a small town) should be culturally aware, and I hope that this can reduce prejudices.

My students deserve the opportunity to get a "taste" (both literally and figuratively) of what the world can offer.

One of the ways to do this is to offer cultural snacks. Another way to get them interested in other cultures is through cultural crafts.

In my class, we listen to cultural music, research famous cultural icons, watch movies based on true stories from around the world, play cultural games, "drop-in" to countries via Google Maps, make cultural crafts, research cultural events and holidays, and taste cultural foods.

Through these experiences, I hope my students have a more receptive attitude toward other cultures and become more interested in learning about - and maybe even wanting to experience - the rest of the world.
