Our students range from ages 12 through 18 years of old, grades 6-12. Our student body consists of 700 students who come from all neighborhoods in New York City. Many of our students are multicultural, multiracial, and multilingual youngsters from marginalized communities who are exploring their school core values: PERSISTENCE • RESPONSIBILITY • KINDNESS • OPEN-MINDEDNESS • COLLABORATION • COURAGE through the World Arts. Our World Arts Students study Music, Art, Theater, Spanish as a Foreign Language and Spanish for Native, Heritage and Advance speakers and English as a New Language. They come from limited exposure to World Arts yet are open-minded to developing their skills. Our students learn in inclusive spaces that encourage brave voices and diverse thinking.
Our students collaborate to build their knowledge of music, art, theater, and language, develop necessary social-emotional skills, and engage in social justice issues.
World Arts students take risks in exploring new ways to express themselves and their cultures. With platforms for sharing unique ideas about urban and global spaces, our students represent with pride, power, and kindness.
My Project
Our art students will be using the supplies to explore the idea of representation in the art world. They will create a series of art pieces that connect to the idea of being seen. Students will answer the questions, What does it mean to be seen in your community, your city, your country, and your world.
These supplies will also enable us to display our creative works and encourage student pride and ownership.
Because of COVID-19, there have been modified guidelines for instrumental music. The individual supplies will help to limit any cross-contamination during performance rehearsals. These supplies will help students create high-quality work in the general music class setting.
Our Native and Heritage Advanced Spanish class will work on a semester-long artist book displaying family oral history, narratives in Español, their last name and coat of arms history, country of origin, and human rights activist in that particular country, Spanish poetry, and Pre-Columbian American civilization, art, and architecture.
Our English Language Learners class will work on a semester-long zine book displaying their journey to the US, their life as a newcomer, comparing and contrasting schooling, food, and traditions in their home country and the US, as well as their dream job and vacation.
Our Theater students will use the supplies to devise original theater performance pieces through sharing of personal stories, character-building- using props and costumes, improvisation, and playwriting. Throughout the year, the theater students will produce small performances in our classrooms to bring our school community together with an attention to social distancing.
In the Spanish Lab, we use our globally diverse cultures and developing Spanish language skills to explore cultural histories while digging deep into our own roots. Students engage with big ideas and concepts through Spanish as a Foreign Language making connections with
