This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am so excited for my incoming second graders! I teach English Language Acquisition in English at a neighborhood school. This year I will teach literacy to both of our English-speaking classes. I already know many incoming students through their siblings, so I know how eager they are to learn. These kids deserve a first-rate education!

Coming out of summer break, students will want and need structure in the classroom.

My students live in poverty, but they are rich in dreams and the desire to learn. I want to set the bar high for their learning, and start prepping for success on day one. My classroom will be a safe, fun place where they can leave their worries behind and learn.

My Project

This year I want to engage students in current events. Independent and group activities are a great place for them to research and analyze real-life stories. But before we can delve into such work, I need strong routines in place. I will teach students how to responsibly use these materials at listening, buddy reading, independent reading, writing, and other literacy workstations.

As a teacher with many students, I need an organized and efficient classroom.

I also need fresh, easily-updated lessons that keep students engaged! With a Time for Kids subscription, my classes will learn about current events and work on research projects with their peers. The four-pocket charts will hold daily objectives and vocabulary so they can stay on-task while I teach small groups. Some kids need space to fidget and work alone - and the wobbly stools will allow that independence. With a laminator and wet-erase markers, I can efficiently change learning targets each day. Finally, my listening center will benefit from rechargeable batteries so kids can improve reading fluency and comprehension.

Although students work at different levels and paces, all of them will access these materials to reach their academic goals. Little things like consistent and reusable materials help a class run smoothly. I will use reading stations as a time to teach collaboration, self-guided learning, and independence. With your help and some great materials, students will work together and achieve their goals!
