Help me give my students a safe and comfortable place to talk about their feelings as they learn grounding and coping skills to help them regulate their emotions.
I am a mental health therapist at the school. I work with a large case load (80-100 students) in a school that houses grades pre-k through 12 grade all in one building. I see students of all ages. Students I work with come to me with many different mental health struggles. It's my job to help them processes these struggles and better manage their emotions so they can have the best and most productive school year possible. In my role it's important to be able to build a strong rapport with the students I am working with. One way to do this is to be sure that students have a safe and comfortable area to meet with me where they can talk about and work on things they are struggling with. I have been working on my space giving it a new coat of paint and adding items I have found along the way to help make this area feel more welcoming.
The rugs and plants will help to brighten up the area we meet, and the posters and signs will serve as a reminder of the positive changes we're working toward.
In my years of doing this work I have had many students ask for fidgets to be able to keep and take back to the classroom to help them with they feel anxious, upset or distracted. While I have some, it is hard for me to purchase enough fidgets to cover my case load. I plan to utilize the calming stickers, the chair bands and the fidgets to help with this.
With these items you will be helping many students improve ability to regulate their emotions, improve their behaviors and strengthen their self-esteem, and self-awareness resulting in them have a better tomorrow and a great school year.
