“Words, Wants, and Wallets: A Financial Literacy Writing Project”

Help me give my students a Lenovo laptop to work on digital projects.

My Project

In today’s world, it’s essential for students to develop both strong communication skills and financial awareness. Words, Wants, and Wallets: A Financial Literacy Writing Project will empower my technology-savvy 6th graders to explore real-world financial concepts through narrative and persuasive writing activities. With the support of a classroom laptop, students will plan, draft, and publish digital projects that demonstrate their understanding of saving, budgeting, and smart spending.

This project integrates 6th-grade ELA standards with financial literacy by engaging students in two connected writing activities:

Activity 1: Budget Narrative Project

Students will craft original short stories about characters navigating financial decisions—whether saving for a new gadget, budgeting for a school event, or deciding between wants and needs. Through these narratives, students will explore the consequences of financial choices while strengthening their skills in plot development, character motivation, and conflict resolution.

Activity 2: Advertisement Analysis & Persuasive Writing

Students will analyze real-world advertisements to identify persuasive techniques and emotional appeals. Then, they’ll apply what they learn by creating persuasive digital posters advertising a financial product or promoting smart money habits to their peers.

With a classroom laptop, students will:

*Draft and revise their narratives using writing apps or cloud-based platforms

*Design eye-catching digital posters for their financial ads using tools like Canva, *Google Slides, or Adobe Express

*Cast their finished projects to the classroom display screen for peer feedback and class discussions

*Research financial literacy topics online to build background knowledge for both projects

*Save and showcase their completed work in a shared digital portfolio

This technology integration will support student engagement, enhance digital literacy skills, and provide opportunities for collaborative learning in a real-world context.
