Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a speech therapist, I work with an incredible group of students who receive speech therapy in order to improve their communication skills. Each of my students show unique strengths, endless curiosity and the determination to grow. However, coming from a low income district and a school with limited funding, it makes it challenging to provide the high quality, multi-sensory materials that support their learning best. My students are eager to participate and thrive when they have hands-on resources that make therapy sessions engaging, interactive, and effective.

My students face a variety of speech and language challenges, including difficulties with expressive and receptive language, articulation and fluency.

They benefit tremendously from resources that help reinforce these skills, using a multi-sensory approach. The items we are requesting such as the MagnaTiles, an inference book, the sounds handbook, and a category game have been chosen because they target essential communication skills in a way that is both enjoyable and effective.

Each of these resources plays a unique role supporting their progress. For example, MagnaTiles encourage descriptive language and conversation, allowing students to build and explain their creations while practicing expressive language. The inference book will support their comprehension by helping them draw conclusions based on clues, a skill that is foundational for strong communication. The Sounds Handbook and category game will give students practice with articulation and word association, helping them connect sounds and categories, which is key for language development. Finally, sequencing cards will enhance their understanding of storytelling and event sequencing, building both expressive language and comprehension skills.

My goal for this project is to provide a therapy environment where my students can make the most of their learning potential.
