Every week, my students learn five new Latin and Greek word elements to improve their vocabulary. By focusing on word elements, they are learning to better decipher words they come across in their daily lives. They get excited about recognizing the word elements they've learned.
The school I teach at is the most diverse school in the USA.
We have the largest student population in our state. We have students from just about every nationality. Some of our students come to us speaking little to no English. Most of our students come from low income households. The students come to us with so much on their plates, that it's hard to imagine how some of them even make it to school every day. Our school is buzzing with possibility and promise. So many of our students are eager for an education so they can become productive and successful members of society.
My Project
My students use dictionaries daily to look up definitions, discover new words, and improve their writing. While technology has become more and more available to our students, several of them still don't have access to online resources for these tasks. Unfortunately, the dictionaries currently in my classroom are in critical condition. After years of love and use, the dictionaries are on their last limbs. Several don't have a cover anymore and are literally hanging on by a spine. We're in serious need of some life support.
My students will not only use these new dictionaries on a daily basis to help strengthen their vocabulary, they will take pride in knowing they are worth resources that are in excellent condition.
