My Students

Most of my students are part of the incoming freshmen class. Prior to the 2021-2022 school year, students were admitted to the school based on academic and merit-based criteria. The admissions policy was recently changed by the school board and the school will now admit students by lottery, similar to the other comprehensive high schools in our district.

I am a new teacher at my school and will be working with the new cohort of freshmen that have been admitted by lottery.

The class of 2025 will be the school's most diverse yet and I'm excited that 100 of those students will be in my classroom. I additionally work with a hardworking group of juniors, teaching them Advanced Placement United States History. The opportunity to teach both groups is really a blessing. They are both so much alike but yet so different as the juniors forge ahead passionately towards their educational goals while the freshmen meander about, looking for inspiration along the way.

My Project

I truly believe that a classroom should be an inviting place. Bare walls are not something we should have in any classroom. I am using a donated printer but I need a cart and ink to get it up and running. I want to make my classroom a place where students are invited to engage in the coursework by posting current events, inspirational quotes, pictures of places in the world, hanging works of students, posters, and maps that I am able to print out and share.

Students learn both actively and passively and surrounding them with positive messages that promote equity in the classroom, maps of areas of the world they are studying, and color printouts of their work will both motivate and engage them in their coursework.

I am looking forward to a future lesson on propaganda during World War II and hope to be able to print out posters and hang them around the room for students to analyze as sources. I have also included study guides in my project for students to access and check out for home study and gift cards to Teachers Pay Teachers so I can purchase posters for printing or posting. These are especially useful to supplement learning for students who are absent because of COVID.
