Wondrous Weavers

Help me give my students a fun weaving experience. Student excitement is palpable as they weave together individual fibers into colorful woven tapestries. The large loom is for a collaborative weaving. Small looms are for individual student weaving.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Let me introduce you to an amazingly creative group of 3rd-5th grade students. Our young artists are a predominately hispanic population of students who come from an economically disadvantaged community. Many students making the journey from Tijuana each day to attend class at our school. None of these hardships hold them back in the art room. It is in the art room where they enjoy discovering themselves, expressing their ideas, and develop their love of the arts. As their art teacher, I find myself in total wonderment of my students daily. Not only do they worked hard to develop their artistic skillsets, but they also have shown tremendous growth in their creative confidence and artistic problem solving skills. It is these valuable lessons from their time in the the art room that I hope they take with them and apply to their future endeavors.

My Project

If you give a person a blanket they will be warm until it wears out. If you teach a person to weave a blanket they will be warm for a life time. Yes. I'm playing off of a familiar quote. It's a little cheesy, but so true!

Weaving is an ancient art form passed down from one generation to the next, and my students are hungry to learn all about it.

Though in recent years the weaving process has become fairly automated, weaving is still a valuable skill for our students to learn about and understand.

It is an empowering art form that helps students develop a sense of independence. Students eyes light up when they realize that they can weave together individual threads to create something beautiful and functional. There is power in knowing you can make something for yourself. Especially as a child growing up in an economically disadvantage community.

The large weaving loom will be used to promote collaborative art making experiences for students. Teamwork is a valuable life skill and allows students to explore weaving and learn from each other. Students can work together to play with different weaving patterns. We can create beautiful tapestries. The possibilities are endless.

The smaller looms are for individual student weaving projects. After learning more about the historical context behind weaving, I would like my 5th grade students to experience weaving on real looms. This will be their time to explore their own ideas, weave using a tool that they may not be able to afford, and create something they can take home to keep.

My hope is that these experiences will ignite a lifelong interest in weaving. I hope my students will pursue learning further about the art form in their future.
