This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Hello all,

My name is Olivia, and I work at an elementary school in Waukegan, Illinois.

I am a third-grade dual language teacher. I am also a grad student obtaining my Master's in Social Work. At our elementary school, we have 368 students enrolled; of those 368, 81% are low-income and 4% are homeless. We also have many newcomer families who arrive in Waukegan with little to no belongings.

I have decided to open a community "store." This store will be accessible to students and families of our elementary school. This store will be open once a month and is entirely free. I have gathered a team of excellent people to support me in making this community store a success: SEL counselor, F.A.C.E. liaison, and our PTO president. All the items in my cart can and will be used in WonderMart. I added snacks such as cookies and goldfish, shampoo/conditioner/body wash and loofas, wipes, diapers, diaper rash cream, soap, toothbrushes/toothpaste, laundry detergent, medicines, toilet paper, hair brushes, deodorant, hangers, and pencils. I have already collected a substantial amount of items. However, our students and community have many unmet needs. All of these items will be available for families in our store.

I am asking for your help to support our students, families, and community. I believe this store will build rapport and collaboration with many of our families and build relationships between the school and home.
