Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"I pledge allegiance to myself and who I want to be..." Each day, we begin our class with a promise that helps my students focus on what they want to do and to learn today to make their future dreams a reality. It's a reminder that we start each day with a positive attitude. We know that there will be challenges, but we also know that we can handle them. We can't control our circumstances, but we do control how we respond to them.

"I can't wait to make a mistake!" From day one, we foster a safe community of learners in our room.

If a student doesn't feel comfortable, they won't try anything new. We are all learners, and support each other in taking risks and making mistakes, because we know that is where the real learning happens. Ours is a Title I school, serving a largely immigrant, Latino population, in a densely-populated urban city. Statistically destined to drop out before they complete high school, my students aspire to go beyond the stereotypes, and be the first college graduates in their family. There are no shortcuts!

My Project

We use whiteboards a lot in our classroom. There's the daily use for most of our math time where students feel empowered to struggle on challenging work knowing they can share it with the whole class or erase it in an instant.

Bright colors and fresh whiteboards make hard work more fun!

Each year, we put the whiteboards through a lot of use and abuse. Students delight knowing they can keep theirs at the end of the year. Bold colors allow students to differentiate their work into parts to share easily and clearly with a table partner.

Low tech, but absolutely a game-changer in our classroom! Your support puts these needed resources into students' hands.
