Wonderful Magical Realism to Engage All Readers

My students need a class set of the "The Van Gogh Cafe" by Cynthia Rylant. Each student will have their own copy as we participate in a shared reading of this enchanting book of short stories.

My Students

My class is composed of an inspiring group of 25 fifth graders. They come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. We also have several students with independent education plans to accommodate their special needs, as well as several English language learners, and students with diagnosed ADHD.

My students come to school every day bursting with a desire to talk, listen and learn.

In writing, they share stories of their family and friends. In math, we work together to fine tune strategies for solving some really hard problems. During reading, you will find the students working in groups, or gathered in a large circle to discuss big ideas and themes in our literature. Conversation and interaction drive our learning and our day. Yes, they can, and do, work independently and with focus when necessary, but even these periods hum with an energy unique to ten year olds.

My Project

A class set of books of "The Van Gogh Cafe" will allow the students to immerse themselves first hand in the delightful prose of Cynthia Rylant. Reading a text together gives my students a shared experience to draw on, and helps to create an invaluable sense of community.

A shared reading of the book allows the students to use questioning and text structures to make sense of a narrative text.

The students will refer to the text as they develop and support their inferences.

After reading the book together, the students will use their books independently as they write about the common setting of this wonderful set of short stories. Because they each have their own copy, the students can cite the evidence in their writing to support their thinking.
