My Students

Last year I taught 4th grade and this year I will be teaching 5th grade, which means I know the incoming class of 5th graders very well. Above all else, these students are eager. They are eager to make a difference and to be the best versions of themselves. They not only encourage one another, but they encourage everyone at our school as well. They are thinkers, problem solvers, dreamers, and innovators. But most importantly, they are the future.

My vision this year is to foster a love of reading and literature by providing a safe and welcoming classroom.I would love for my students to be able to read the novel "Wonder." This book teaches students the value of being kind to all.

Reading this book would teach my students about kindness, diversity, and appreciation for all!

My Project

I have taught this novel study before and have seen AMAZING RESULTS (sadly that set of novels was borrowed from another teacher). Please allow me to describe to you the differences in the years that I taught this novel verses the years that I did not.

This book teaches students about the importance of acceptance of all types of people; no matter the color of their skin, the sound of their voice, the way their brain works, or the way their face looks.

In the years that I have used this novel to teach students about the importance of celebrating our diversity, I have felt a profound sense of family in my classroom. My students protected each other, stood up for one another, and were not afraid to discuss any problems or disagreements they may have had with one another. They learned about morals and were taught the themes of having courage and being kind.

I will use this novel in my language arts instruction to teach different reading comprehension skills. Students will be taught how to recognize the theme of a text, analyze the thoughts and actions of different characters, and how to infer why different characters react the way that they do. More important than these skills, is that it teaches them much more than reading analysis. Students will learn the true value of how far a little bit of kindness can go.
