Do you remember feeling left out? Do you remember wanting to fit in? Fifth graders are on the verge of entering middle school, and they often have many social challenges. The book Wonder is an excellent way to teach acceptance and literacy skills together.
My students are low income students in a diverse city.
They want to fit in socially, but they are not always inclusive of others. Cliques form quickly. Additionally, many are below grade level readers, and need to learn strategies to help them become better readers.
My Project
I am asking for a class set of thirty-one copies of the book Wonder. I plan to use this book in whole class instruction to discuss inclusion of peers and bullying. My students will be introduced to and practice a number of literacy strategies using this book. In addition, students will use this book during small group instruction to practice differentiated literacy skills based on their individual needs.
Wonder is a powerful book for fifth graders.
I hope to instill my love of reading with my students as well as teach them better ways to interact socially. This book may help my students become better readers, but if they connect to the character they may also become better people.
