My Students

My students each have unique, inspiring personalities. They have shown resilience throughout the entirety of pandemic. However, the pandemic has left its mark. Whole group instruction can be difficult when so many unique voices are still learning and developing who they are and challenging what they thought they already knew. This pandemic has also brought to light the severe inequality they face compared to many other school districts.

Though my students lack many resources, they make the best with what they have and continue to show perseverance.

My Project

Recently my classroom started our first novel study. For the first time all year, students were literally begging to continue the lesson so they could keep reading the story up until dismissal. Good stories connect us... A good book can inspire not only a love for reading, but also bestow the encouragement and courage for a student to continue growing in their learning.

Stories place students in another reality, a truly equalizing one.

In our school district, we are provided with two novel studies. After seeing the hunger in which my students devoured the first novel, an additional third novel would provide a continuous study throughout the year during Literacy Intervention periods. As a bonus, students would build reading confidence from their ability to proudly state they read three novels by the end of the school year.

The teachers pay teacher gift card would provide ease in lesson planning and curriculum building. These gift cards are useful for their versatility, and though the primary use would be to find additional material for the Wonder novel study, it would be repurposed for other useful skill building activities given what remained.
