This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a world where kindness is often taken for granted. They come from communities where you have to look out for number one and sometimes other people are forgotten about along the way. I want to change this perception with this novel.

The school my students attend is a Title 1 school.

Every student receives free breakfast and lunch with the majority receiving food bags for the weekend as well. Despite whatever their home situation may be like, however, my students come to school to learn. They genuinely crave knowledge and want to know about the world around them. They often desire to make the world better but don't know how.

My Project

My students will be using this novel to better their comprehension and writing skills. At the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, we will read about Auggie and his life as an "outsider." We will learn from his teacher's precepts about life and journal about what they mean to us individually. We will analyze the theme of this story and how it can change our lives if we let it.

With this novel, my students will not only be learning vital reading and writing skills, but through a deeper study, they will also learn about the importance and value of kindness.

They will begin to understand that making the world a better place doesn't require some grand gesture; it can begin with a simple unselfish act of kindness.
