Have you ever wondered what would happen if you took at a pile of different materials and let students manipulate them to make something new and different? That is exactly what we do in the SMART Lab. We teach and guide students to recycle, reuse, and manipulate objects to create and design new things. Our students are in a Title I school which means most come from low income families. Many of our families do not have the resources or means to open the world around them to their children. This is where my classroom steps in and creates real world experiences and opportunities for each and every student. All students have the ability and freedom to succeed in their own unique way. Students are encouraged and supported to make their own design choices and thoughts while being challenged to learn and be successful. We are a primary school which means we serve Kindergarten, First and Second Grade students.
My Project
“Wonder Bins” have various goals that include both teachers and students. Our school has encouraged teachers over the last few years to incorporate STEAM resources within their classrooms, and this project will offer a boost to jump-starting those teachers who have to be hesitant about the incorporation. We will promote the bins as supplemental materials for lessons, to promote positive behavior, to encourage higher-level thinking skills, as well as ignite student curiosity. One of the goals is to encourage teachers to incorporate aspects of STEAM throughout regular classroom lessons. Having the “Wonder Bins” will give teachers readably available resources without a lot of prep. Teachers will check out bins to use and return to the Smart Lab to be resupplied. Having quality resources available would alleviate searching for and gathering quality materials. This would also take the financial strain off personally funding resources for students.
When you hear the word Steam, it automatically rings higher-order thinking skills.
Promoting and providing this opportunity is crucial in our society. Students often want what is easy and quickly accessible, whereas in reality we should want to strive for those things by thinking “out the box.” We have to be prepared and willing to teach beyond the textbook. Simply put, we must not be scared to step outside our comfort zones, where there is always a right or wrong answer. Sometimes things are not black and white and it is the gray space that leads us to our biggest discoveries.
Of course students learn differently, therefore the bins will provide different methods of learning for all students. All of the bins will require some type of hands-on activities but they will meet the needs of all learners. This project is driven based on the need for diversity in learning.
