Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the school year, I want my students to have grown exponentially from the books that they have read and the connections they can make. I want to broaden their horizons and challenge their thinking with amazing classic literature.

I teach at a middle school in New York City.

My school is a blossoming environment where the interests of the students and what is best for them is at the forefront of everything that we do everyday. I want to reach the young girls in my school through a class in which they feel empowered, encouraged, and excited about being a young lady. I hope through this class I can open their minds and their hearts to the struggles that they might face, or have faced already, and give them a place in which they feel safe to explore their fears, feelings, hopes, dreams and desires. Through the literature and film that I want to explore and discuss, I know that my students will see and feel a connection with the characters that will help to reassure them that their struggles are not theirs alone and we have a community within our school in which we support each other and we are strong within ourselves.

My Project

I have requested two class set of the books, The Virgin Suicides and Sula, so my students can explore the stories of women in society to help empower themselves during this fragile time in their development. We will read these books and discuss the struggles, hopes, dream,s and accomplishments of the characters within the book. With such a diverse population within my school, I want the students to have literature that mirrors and speaks to their unique struggles and life situations. Students will write journal entries and essays to help foster their English skills and they will be able to make connections between themselves and the characters that they are reading about. They will learn how to make real-life connections to fictional/semi-fictional texts. They will also learn how to dissect a novel so that they analyze the plot and characters to see the underlying themes and messages within the stories.

Your donation to this project will improve my classroom because we will have a new range of literature to read and analyze.

Students will be given access to classic, amazing, positive literature that we currently do not have access to now. Future students would also see this same benefit with a permanent class set of rich literature to read and discuss.
