My Students

I teach enthusiastic and eager-to-learn teens and preteens in an urban area of SW Atlanta. The majority of my students are of African-American descent and come from a multitude of socio-economic backgrounds.

My students are short, tall, big, and small and I absolutely love them all!

Daily they demonstrate their interest and excitement to learn about the subjects of math and science. Being able to engage in hands on activities allows them to understand math and science concepts on a deeper level.

My Project

Across my classroom is a sea of black faces. They are yearning to see role models that look just like them. As a class we are asking for a new laptop computer that will allow us to gain more insight into STEM trail blazers. My students last year looked up statistics about women in STEM and especially minority women in STEM and found all kinds of surprising data.

It is hard to dream what you can not see; "Only 1 in 10 STEM professionals is a minority woman.

I want to inspire my students to see, dream, and to change these statistics and the status quo"

With the computer, we will be able to engage in more research and activities that will inspire dreams and change lives. Tomorrow will read: "Women make up more than half of STEM professionals."
