Women in STEM Exploration, Innovation & Communication through Video Production
Help me give my students a variety of National Geographic Explorer LEGO sets to engineer green screen backdrops for their video research projects in order to educate others about the achievements of Women in STEM.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
As a STEM teacher and librarian, I have the privilege of working with 320 pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade students in our library and in individual classrooms. The integration of STEM learning experiences has been nothing short of magical, helping my diverse students find confidence, passion, empowerment, success, and creative ways to express their learning. Many of my students will be the first in their families to attend and graduate college. Helping spark an interest in STEM for my youngest learners can ignite a passion and change the trajectory for their futures. When you support my classroom, you become a part of their stories and successes.
Providing my students with authentic STEM learning experiences will give them opportunities to develop 21st-century skills, establish a growth mindset, and empower them to overcome any obstacles standing in their way and accomplish their goals and dreams.
My students are energetic, eager to learn, and excited to be in school. They love hands-on learning opportunities and having a voice and choice in their learning as they become empowered learners. I know they will deeply appreciate your generosity and support of their classroom.
My Project
My project integrates research, technology, LEGO and creativity as students engage in purposeful STEM exploration and 21st century skill development. Through this project, students will be inspired from the If/Then Collection as they learn about modern Women in STEM to further research Women in STEM pioneers who made history and paved the way for current and future Women in Stem - including themselves! After learning about Jess Cramp, students will be inspired to research Sylvia Earle or after learning about Sam Wynns be inspired to research Jane Goodall. After researching, students will then engage in engineering and video production to educate other students locally and globally about Women in STEM.
Students' video productions will not only demonstrate their knowledge of Women in STEM research, but will include many other elements of STEAM and 21st century skill development including engineering, technology, video production, green screen effects, creativity, collaboration, and communication.
Students will use the National Geographic Explorer LEGO sets generously donated through this project and/or other creative supplies or building materials, to engineer figures, objects, or scenes to add visual graphics to their research videos. These engineered creations will be featured in their video as green screen backdrops and props.
Students will film themselves presenting their research in front of a green screen so they will be able to layer the video of themselves onto their engineered creations. For example, a student producing a video about Jane Goodall may create a LEGO jungle and use the green screen effect to appear like she is actually in her LEGO jungle teaching about Jane’s research. A student producing a video about Ellen Ochoa may construct a rocket and use the green screen effect to stand beside her LEGO rocket as she describes Ellen’s contributions to the space program.
