My Students

Wiggly, wobbly, and overall wonderful -- that is how I would describe my preschoolers with autism. Last school year I piloted our district's first preschool autism-specific class, wherein we focused on classroom-readiness skills in a supportive and structured setting. Many of my students lacked the ability to focus and attend to classroom activities such as circle time and tabletop tasks. With use of environmental manipulations such as partitions and obstructions, some students were able to focus, but some continued to have difficulty. My preschool students need to move -- a lot!

My Project

Oftentimes in preschool, we expect our students to be able to sit at a circle time or small group activity for upwards of 10 minutes or more. Sometimes, with some manipulations of the environment (and perhaps with a very reinforcing toy or activity) my students were able to meet that expectation with no problem. Most times, however, their wiggly bodies continued to find their way off the chair and essentially away from the learning activity.

When my students had difficulty sitting, I wanted to honor their needs rather than force a skill that many preschoolers have yet to master.

Preschoolers need to move, often for much more than the recommended 60 minutes of active play. Moreover, studies have shown that movement may be linked to cognitive processing. In light of these pieces of information, I looked towards alternative seating that would allow my students to continue to move while still attending to classroom activities.

The Kids Kore (and Toddler Kore) Wobble Chairs are a great alternative to our current seating situation. Instead of a stable chair base, the Wobble Chairs allow and encourage students to "wobble" with their rounded stool base. Instead of a seat back that might encourage slouching or passive sitting, the omission of the seat back on the Wobble Chair triggers core strength. Finally, the seat height is perfect for my little guys to keep their feet on the floor! Overall, these features encourage movement and active engagement of my students. I am confident that the use of the Wobble Chairs will provide a positive learning experience for my wiggly preschoolers!
