Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students need math manipulatives that they will use for counting, adding, subtracting, and forming a base ten. Mathematics for my first-grade students is the foundation for developing essential skills that they will use throughout their lives.

At this early stage, math builds the groundwork for problem-solving, logical thinking, and confidence in handling numbers and patterns.

Currently my students are studying and making base ten and they need the Unifix cubes so that they will practice and build confidence in learning this math skill.

I have varying levels of learning for my students who need basic foundational math skills. They will use the Unifix cubes to recognize, count, and write numbers. This will help my students understand quantities and the concept of how many, setting the stage for future learning in building their confidence in counting.

For my other students, simple addition and subtraction introduces my students to the idea of combining and taking away, laying the groundwork for all future arithmetic, including combining the Unifix cubes in tens to build up to 120, with more precision and noticing patterns.

The comfortable seating I am requesting for my students will be used to have my students sit around the classroom in groups so that they will share their mathematical thinking with other students.
