Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The basketball team players are a wonderful mix of native English speakers and second language learners. They are nurturing, caring and eager to learn. They are growing up in east Harlem which is a high poverty area.

There are not a lot of sports centered activities for our children outside of the basketball team and this becomes the highlight of their week.

From practice to actual games, the students develop skills that are not easily reproduced in the classroom. The leadership, compassion, and comraderie that develops between these boys and girls are skills they will carry for a lifetime.

My Project

One of the biggest struggles we face with our team is holding effective practices due to lack of equipment and resources to simulate real game opportunities.

This equipment will help improve our practices by providing agility opportunities with the cones, improved speed with the wind chutes as well as passing and rebounding practice with mannequins and rebounding net.

They are also going to be able to identify who is on their team during practice games with the use of the pinnies. Finally, the girls on the team will look stylish and keep their hair our of their face with the headbands while winning.
