My Students

I work with some innovative, energetic, and dedicated 9th graders at my school. Like many teenagers in their age group, my students are curious and have a passion. I am always taken back by the level of enthusiasm they bring to my class every day, even though for many of them, Math is not one of their favorite subjects.

Life is about making mistakes and learning from them.

I emphasize this statement because Math is all about making mistakes and how you can learn from them to do better next time. When I hear many of the stories my students tell about the mistakes they have made in their lives and how these mistakes made them want to give up and not come back, it makes me realize more and more how different their lives are from a normal teenager and the many obstacles they have to face before they even get to school. Still, they come to class ready to take on a new day, make mistakes, and learn from them.

My Project

As students enter Algebra 1 in their freshman year, there is a huge emphasis on graphing and how to incorporate technology in order to create and analyze graphs. I want my students to learn everyday tasks/skills using multiple entry points and some of them prefer to graph using their calculators.

I believe by being proficient in using their calculators to solve problems, they are more prepared for state tests that require the use of such devices.

It is always difficult to extend your learning when you have to share calculators or follow the teacher's instructions because not enough calculators work. I believe that by helping me purchase batteries for my students' calculators you are helping them be successful and use the same resources many children in suburban districts do not have to worry about.
