My Project

I teach a phenomenal group of middle school students with intellectual disabilities, whose ages range from 11-14. Our class also includes students with Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, and Speech and Language disorders. I've been teaching for 32 years, but have only taught this population for the past 8 years. Of all the years of teaching special needs students, these have been the most rewarding and where I've felt I've made the most impact. My students are taught through a Life Skills curriculum, which includes Domestic Maintenance. The students enjoy cooking lessons as part of the Domestic Maintenance Curriculum. They learn kitchen safety, how to measure, sequencing skills, how to follow directions, how to identify cooking utensils, how to work as a team, and how to clean up behind themselves.

The Life Skills Curriculum, specifically Domestic Maintenance, is essential for my students' ability to become independent in the future as many intellectually disabled individuals secure jobs that require the above skills.

Before the pandemic, we were able to cook at least twice a month. We have not been able to cook since, as we currently have a very old range with missing knobs, which makes it almost impossible to cook, as we are unable to gauge the temperature. A new range would allow us to resume our cooking lessons and allow the students to benefit from the many lessons learned in the kitchen. We appreciate your consideration and hope you're able to help.
