My Students

My students range from 11-14 years old. They are curious, full of youthful energy, and are fun to be around. Everyday they face a different challenge, whether it be in the school, home, or community setting.

Working in this middle school setting, I witness these maturing adolescence and am in awe of their resilience in a day and age so different than my own.

I can never fully put myself in their shoes, and though at times it seems that these students need to be taught about life, I have realized that they have their own story and experiences to share.

These students deserve to make mistakes so they can learn to lead. They deserve to be challenged so they can learn to keep moving forward. They deserve to express themselves.

My Project

Much of the literature requested for this projects, or rather, projects are primary sources of information, written in the time of old in Hawaii. My students will use such literature to support and encourage a year-long journey in the discipline of traditional Hawaiian farming. As novice gardeners, these students will apply knowledge of the seasons, moon phases, and culturally significant plants shared in the thoughts of these pages. In our school garden, students will become novice practitioners and curators of this information. Their learning this year is only the beginning of their journey as stewards of the land for a culturally-centered and sustainable future.
