My Students

My second grade students are excited about the newly installed Smartboard in our classrooom. They are currently limited in some uses of the new technology because we do not have a wireless keyboard and mouse that they could access.

My 2nd graders are from predominantly low income families, who have immigrated to southern California from Mexico, El Salvador, India, Vietnam and Armenia.

The children love school, as it plays a major role in their lives beyond academics. We feed our students two free meals a day, and provide outreach services such as health clinics, clothes, backpacks, and counseling services. We hosted summer school for students who did not make proficiency during the regular school year. My school has recently been upgrading and replacing outdated technology. We were fortunate to receive a Smartboard in 2014.

My Project

I am requesting four wireless keyboards and a mouse component for each group of six students who sit at a cluster of tables pushed together in our classroom. Our classroom is arranged this way because it facilitates collaboration among the students. This would enable each group to participate in many interactive activities and academic games to reinforce skills in language arts and math that were being displayed on the Smartboard. Currently I have a desktop computer with a wired keyboard and mouse hooked up to the Smartboard, which only I can access. Students are being expected to become comfortable with keyboard functions and usage in order to take the Smarter Balance Assessments in 3rd grade which will be given online. I believe having a wireless keyboard and mouse for each group of students would be very important in many applications.

This project would improve my classroom by giving students the opportunity to practice keyboarding skills; have more autonomy with interactive skill-based activities displayed on the Smartboard; and in turn boost their self-confidence which leads to increased self-esteem.
