Wireless Headphones for Sound Abatement

My students need these 7 headphones in order to listen to documentaries I play in class because our school has cubicles instead of walls.

My Students

Our school recently moved to a facility where, due to budgetary restraints, classrooms are essentially giant cubicles without walls. I utilize PBS documentaries in my class but, due to the other classes (particularly physical education), my students are unable to hear them.

Our school is a new school, created in 2008 through an Ohio initiative to increase the amount of students who may pursue careers in the STEM fields.

Our school is one of nine schools generated from that initiative but, unlike the other eight schools, ours is regional, attracting students, of all academic levels, from five different counties and over 20 different school districts. We function much like a vocational school in that students are able to take part in extra-curricular activities at their home districts. As the picture in my profile indicates, we are very project-based, with student projects transcending traditional curricular subject areas. For example, the 9th grade engages in a project involving water-propelled rockets. In their science and math classes, they learn about the physics of flight; in their English and social studies classes, they create a business plan to market and sell their rockets; in art class they work on their rockets' designs.

My Project

In September, our school moved to a new facility to accommodate our growing student population. Due to budgetary restraints, we were unable to construct walls for each classroom and instead utilize cubicle walls which allow sound from one room to enter into another. The result is that many students are unable to hear their teachers or each other during discussions. In 2009, PBS selected me as one of the nation's "Innovative Teachers" due in part to my use of PBS documentaries in my U.S. history class. However, because of the lack of permanent walls, my students are unable to hear many crucial parts of the dialog from these videos. While we are pursuing sound abatement possibilities such as hanging baffles from the ceiling, the reality is that if I crank up the volume so my students can hear, neighboring classrooms will be disrupted by the noise. These wireless headphones are, in my opinion, the best solution we have to alleviate these issues.

My U.S.

history curriculum focuses on exposing students to the experiences of marginalized groups within the U.S. and their struggle for equality. Rather than me talking to students about events like the 1971 AIM siege of Wounded Knee, I prefer Russell Means, Denis Banks and other AIM members to describe to my students what that event was like. These headphones will allow my students to hear their words, in their voices, through documentaries like PBS' We Shall Remain.
