Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Practice makes perfect and in the case of writing music notation, nothing could be more true. This project is the second of two projects that will provide materials students need to practice writing music.

Our school is a Title I school where virtually all of the students are learning English as a second language, receiving free or reduced lunch, or are considered to be "at risk" for dropping out of school.

Many of the students carry two or more of these challenges to learning with them through their school day. As a result, we want to do everything we can to ensure that every moment of their educational day is fully engaged and embedded in hands-on learning. My students love to come to music because we sing, dance and play games that are effortful and joyful. They also enjoy coming to music because they have the opportunity to be creative. One aspect that they particularly enjoy is learning how to write music notation in preparation for writing their own compositions.

My Project

I am requesting an additional 10 lapboards to add to the 25 already requested in the first project so that I have enough for each student. I am also asking for a class set of dry erase markers and erasers that will be used with the lapboards. These materials will be used as part of our work to develop music literacy. Just as a child who learns to write their name or copy C A T for the first time is taking one more step along the road to language literacy, a child copying down a quarter is moving along the path to musical literacy. In the development of language and musical literacy, meaning develops before, during and after this stage. Moving from the use of manipulatives to drawing your own symbols is an important step. These dry erase materials will help us meet this need efficiently without wasting paper. I am also requesting a set of wristbands to be used when students are playing recorder to help them remember that their left hand goes on top.

Practice may make perfect, but it also makes permanent.

All of the materials in this project are requested in an effort to provide my students with the opportunity to practice making music as perfectly as possible. If they can develop a good musical foundation now, they will not only enjoy music more fully for the rest of their lives, but they will also improve their language literacy because music literacy helps improve language literacy.
