Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a middle school. All of our students receive special education and are on Individual Education Plans, our students' primary disabilities are Social-Emotional and/or Autism. I am fortunate to work with these students as they are, focused, and motivated not to let their disabilities impact their learning.

Our school is one of the most impoverished schools in Massachusetts, According to the Department of Education, 90% of our students live in poverty.

In spite of their circumstances, they attend school daily and are ready to learn.

We serve them with engaging activities, collaboration, and tireless efforts to help them be successful. Our school is dedicated to Positive Behavioral Supports and are committed to helping children become positive members of their community.

My Project

Hats and Gloves will give our students the chance to get outside and get some fresh air while staying warm. All of my students fall well below the poverty level and often can't afford basic essentials.

Keeping the students warm and protected from the cold elements will provide them with the opportunity to get out of the house and be active, which will improve their focus and energy, promoting academic success.

This is crucial, especially during remote learning.

Research shows that “spending time in fresh air, increases energy in 90 percent of people and promotes higher levels of positive emotions" According to Richard Ryan, researcher and professor of psychology at the University of Rochester. This will be significantly beneficial as all our students have a social emotional diagnosis.

In addition, the socks will bring some holiday cheer, and wristbands will provide positive affirmations, which we all need, especially in 2020.
