This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My kids are AWESOME. I love having the opportunity to see them grow and develop into young adults. Though many of my kids have individual struggles and challenges that many of us couldn't even imagine, they still show up to school. My school district serves roughly 1,700 students whose families are experiencing homelessness and many of those students are in my school.

Almost all of my students come from low-income households, many students are homeless at times, and many of my students are in foster care though these labels do not define them.

They still pick up a novel and read. They still pick up a pencil and write. They still ask questions and seek guidance. This alone gives me the motivation to walk into our school every day.

Witnessing my students learn that they are POWERFUL, that they ARE somebody, and that they CAN do something meaningful with their lives is a gift. Listening to students tell me they've learned to actually enjoy reading and writing is a gift.

My Project

This project will help meet my students' basic needs such as staying warm and having healthy snacks available for when they are hungry. Winter is coming and the majority of my students either have a long walk to the bus stop or walk to school. Being able to give my students winter accessories that will keep them warm during these cold months will help motivate them to come to school every day and try their best.

Helping to provide my students with basic needs such as hats, gloves, socks, and snacks during these winter months is directly connected to their academic success.
