My school is made up of all refugee and immigrant students in grades 2-10 who are new to the United States! Students attend our school for one year to take ESL (English as a Second Language) and content area classes then transfer to their neighborhood school. Students all qualify for free or reduced lunch.
It's a unique and amazing school filled with diversity with over 15 countries represented.
Despite the fact that many of our students have experienced trauma and have broken educational backgrounds, they are so eager to learn and appreciative of their school and the opportunities given to them. They love music class and participate joyfully- it's most students' first time taking a music class! Students learn to work together as a team, and learn to read music, making them smarter and well-rounded students!
My Project
This project is for something very simple, but such a basic need in the Indiana Winter- Snow boots and shoes to keep feet warm! Students at our school are all refugees and immigrants new to the United States, and so many are very unprepared for our Indiana Winter. And yes, it already feels like winter out there and we've already had our first snow! It's much more fun to be in the snow with the proper footwear! Our students are so eager for success, and meeting this basic need will help them to do their best and focus on their studies. There is a 5X match on this project, so each $1 helps!
We've been so lucky to have had projects funded to provide coats, and winter accessories- but there is still a need for the winter boots which this project will provide.
Boots will make such a difference in overall warmth, and these are the sizes of boots that are needed, along with a few pairs of sneakers for students who need new shoes that fit properly! Having this project funded would mean so much to our students and show them that they are cared for and welcomed to the United States!
