The students I teach are considered high needs. Our school is titled "International Studies Learning Center," and our focus is inspiring and preparing global citizens.

I have been working on culturally approachable and appropriate curriculum. Several students have mentioned religion and family being a huge part of their life, and Winn-Dixie is precisely that, so this speaks to the students' collective interest and collective experience.

Reading is something that needs to start in the classroom and continue at home. I am integrating silent, sustained reading into the core curriculum for all the students in 7th grade English. Unfortunately, funding has been cut again for program, and the students need an avenue for reading and integrating that reading into their life experience, and "Because of Winn-Dixie" would supply this for our student body.

Your help will ensure that my students will have the opportunity to read, share, and understand how personal experiences shape future experiences and time spent with friends, family, and fellow students. Reading needs to start today!
