My Students

In the city of Newark, many students live below the poverty line. Some cannot even wear clean clothes to school and are targets for bullies. Some students are teased and chastised because they were showing up to school in unkempt manners. Some of these students were becoming chronic absentees—missing three to five days of school per month—out of shame. We are a Title I school.

At this time in the school year, students are quarantined under the stay-at-home order in this Corona Virus and cannot go to school until the pandemic is over.

We have begun to engage them outside of the classroom with multiple social media platforms such as Zoom, Webex, Screen Castify, Google Docs, and Google Meetings. I am able to connect with them in spite of their physical attendance. Many of my students are members of the football team. I am involved in them beyond the classroom by involving them in positive social change, community service activities, and extracurricular activities. We also want them to learn the importance of serving their community.

My Project

WSHS Football Team has made it to the division final for the last three years. Each year, especially during the COVID 19 crisis and slashed school budgets for extracurricular activities such as sports equipment and teams are racing to locate supplemental funding sources.

WSHS is a Title I school that seeks to bring along funding partners into their winning streak by supporting our student-athletes as they go around the state of New Jersey and compete for their schools and city's pride.

In order for teams to thrive and compete they must first have team pride. These hand warmers will increase their focus and abilities.
