My Project

In 1990, well-known children’s literature researcher, Rudine Sims Bishop, wrote about “windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors” as it relates specifically to children’s books. She states that books should be windows into the realities of others, and books can be mirrors that reflect the lives of readers. Sliding glass doors show us how readers can walk into a story and become part of the world created by the author becoming fully immersed in another experience.

Guided by these books in my classroom, we will approach children’s stories through the lens of windows, mirrors, and sliding glass doors.

My students will interact with these books during shared read aloud time, independent and partner reading, and phonics instruction. I hope to prioritize diversity, honor many cultures, develop early literacy and storytelling skills, and promote empathy.
