Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“Teaching math to small groups of low-income, minority kindergartners has a positive impact on their learning and can help bridge the divide with higher-income peers,” say University of Michigan researchers. I teach one of the most motivated, inspiring and eager to learn first graders in one of the city’s poorest neighborhoods in New York. Most of the students live in shelters and some who don’t speak English at home. However, what I love most about my students, is in spite of the challenges, I enjoy watching them peer teaching in small groups and how much of a confident learner they are in the classroom.

Currently we have a lot of snap cubes but lack other manipulative to start our new math center in our classroom.

In spite of our limited manipulatives resources, my students are still able to learn but having adequate and appropriate math materials will better support ELL students and students with special needs.

Please help these Eager Beavers, first graders to have a positive impact, an engaging experience with our first interactive math center.

My Project

Creating a math center and having the right materials will make learning more conducive for every student in my classroom. These manipulatives will help the students to be more engaged in mathematics. They will not only be learning about math but they will be doing math. The materials will further support small group instruction and allow lessons to be differentiated. Which will aid students with special needs and English Language Learners (ELL) to make connections between materials being used and mathematical concepts being taught.

Likewise, the manipulatives will also support cooperative learning, as students work collaboratively they are solving problems, finding fix it solutions or ideas and building confidence because they are given the opportunity to test and confirm their reasoning.

More over, the mathematic books will increase the students’ critical thinking, increase math vocabularies and concepts, they will come to realize that mathematics can be found all around them, in their home, the park, the playground etc. The illustrations in the math books will further bring concepts being taught alive as students use manipulatives to make it more meaningful. My students will be excited about having these materials to interact with, I know that this project will increase their interest, test scores and love for mathematics.
